Background:
Born and raised in Calimport on the edge of the Calim Desert, most of his prejudices and judgements were formed there. For instance he thinks that in general halflings are lazy and that half orcs are just low class, no more, no less.
His father was a trader that traveled across the Calim Desert regularly and was often out of town. Quaid assumed the "fatherly" role at home when his dad was out trading but never really felt prepared to look after his mother and sisters. Falling in with the common folks of Calmiport, Quaid became less of a guardian and more of a layabout who spent most of his time seeking pleasures in the city. Sensing this weakness in him, other traders and thugs began to harass Quaid and his family. This eventually escalated to where the family home was broken into and his family was brutally beaten and robbed. Quaid's father, realizing that his son needed some guidance and, most importantly, discipline submitted Quaid to the Clerics of the temple of Loviatar. Under their punishing guidance, Quaid eventually found his way to the Disciples of the White Rod and became a monk in the service of Loviatar.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:From Wikipedia:]The world is filled with pain and torment, and the best that one can do is to suffer those blows that cannot be avoided and deal as much pain back to those who offend. Kindnesses are the best companions to hurts, and increase the intensity of suffering. Let mercy of sudden abstinence from causing pain and of providing unlooked-for healing come over you seldom, but at whim, so as to make folk hope and increase the Mystery of Loviatar's Mercy. Unswerving cruelty will turn all folk against you. Act alluring, and give pain and torment to those who enjoy it as well as to those who deserve it most or would be most hurt by it. The lash, fire, and cold are the three pains that never fail the devout. Spread Loviatar's teachings whenever punishment is meted out. Pain tests all, but gives strength of spirit and true pleasure to the hardy and the true. There is no true punishment if the punisher knows no discipline. Wherever a whip is, there is Loviatar. Fear her—and yet long for her.
He's been sent to the Baldur's Gate area by the Disciples of the White Rod to spread the Dogma and to try and see about founding a temple in the area. The Flaming Fists seem tolerant to worship of a variety of deities and since Loviatar worshipers aren't insane psychotics there's hope that they will be tolerated in the city and eventually be allowed to found a temple there. "Despite being considered an evil deity, Loviatar has many open churches, and groups of good followers and clergy who set out to merit pain and suffering to those whom they deem deserve it, mainly followers and worshippers of other evil deities opposed to Loviatar."
