Extending a helping hand

DM Vukodlak wrote:Following the news that the bulk of the Amnian garrison stationed in Beregost has departed heading southward, residents of the recovering war-ravaged town noted an almost immediate uptick in criminal activity of every kind, including violent crime. A local man who had spent the evening drinking at Samuel Feldepost's tavern was found the next morning stabbed to death in what appeared to investigators to be a mugging gone terribly wrong, the man's corpse being found stuffed between two heaps of trash in an alleyway after being stripped of his valuables by the assailant. The few remaining guards have been overwhelmed by the sudden surge in complaints brought to them, and residents have started to grumble that the guards appear to be turning a blind eye to the pickpockets and small-time criminals infesting the town to focus on the murderers and other major affronts to decency that seem to be becoming a common, even daily, occurrence in Beregost.
With the situation in Beregost growing even worse since the situation began, a letter is dispatched to the Temple of Lathander and one to the Governess of Beregost:

To the Lady, Governess Isabela Benino

I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirit. My name is Aaron Lyonaler, I hold the title of Knight General within the Order of the Silver Rose. I am writing to you to offer a service for the town of Beregost. With the decline of Amnish soldiers to patrol the township, crime has become a problem for the good citizens, as I am certain you are aware. I wish to offer my assistance, and the assistance of any available knights within my Order, to the soldiers that remain stationed in the town as well as the Lathanderites in patrolling the town. I wished to formally inform you of my intentions, so that our presence would not be perceived as hostile in any way.

It has come to my attention that the crime occurring in the town may have become organized, though admittedly my information is mainly hearsay, and I wish to aid in removing these criminals that the people may be safe within their own homes. I do not mean to call blame on you or your men, as I am certain the remaining soldiers are stretched thin and doing all in their power to quell the problem. Should you have any objections to my presence, or others within my Order, patrolling the township, I would ask you please notify me.

Another letter is dispatched to the priesthood of the temple of Lathander. The letter would be delivered to Ross and Brian, the Knights standing watch outside the temple.

To the Brotherhood of Lathander,

My name is Aaron Lyonaler, Knight General of the Order of the Silver Rose. It has come to my attention that the Church has sent its protectors to patrol the Town's Street's, and I wished to convey my appreciation to your church for its aid in the protection of the citizens of Beregost during this time of hardship. I also wish to ask formally for your blessing in patrolling the streets of Beregost with others of your faith. I assure you that my intentions are pure, and only wish to aid the town during this crisis. Other Knights within my Order will also, as their availability permits, join with me in offering protection to the town.

Should there be any information that my Order and the Church of lathander can offer each other, please feel free to send word to me. I would also ask for a name of one that can act as a liaison to exchange information, should the need arise. My meager talents are at your disposal, should you have need of me. May the The Morninglord's Light ever brighten your paths.

A letter is soon returned to Aaron Lyonaler, sealed with the sunrise symbol of the Church of the Morninglord. The writing is simply printed and legible, written in a calm and steady hand:

Sir Aaron Lyonaler,

It is with great gratitude that we are returning your correspondence. Too few are those who, on seeing the hardship in this town, decide to lend its residents a helping hand. We hope one day to meet with you in person to grasp and shake that helping hand.

Unfortunately, we at the Song of the Morning temple do not have the legal authority to formally encourage or request your aid. As per the 1348 Treaty of Beregost, our township's been made into a protectorate of the nation of Amn, which maintains political and military authority here.

That being said, there are no treaties in the world that will prevent the sons and daughters of the Morninglord from helping those in need -- and this town, regardless of its history, or its changing political fortunes, remains a town full of our families, friends, and parishioners.

We will, therefore, assist you where we can in an informal manner. We do "patrol" the town, in a sense, making house calls for medical matters and watching for trouble; but we do not police it. We simply do not have the authority to arrest or detain individuals we suspect are up to no good. Unless we catch them red-handed our own hands are tied.

For that reason, we would strongly encourage you to write to our governess, Isabella Benino, if you haven't already. It is possible that she will welcome you and your companions as auxiliaries, to aid and assist the small garrison that Amn has left us. If you are granted that license, we will assist you as we assist them, wherever we are able.

To coordinate with the Church in this and other matters, please contact either of us, or the high priest, Kelddath Ormlyr. We look forward to working with you, and ushering in a new dawn for Beregost and its people. Lathander's blessings upon you.

Having read over the letter received from the Lady Isabela Benino, Aaron pens a reply. Sending it away to Amn delivered to the Governess.

Lady Isabela Benino,

I write again in reply to your recent correspondence to my Order. I was initially pleased to have received word from you, assuming, of course, that it was in response to my missive to you offering aid. Instead it seems that my offer was ignored, as it has yet to even be properly addressed.

I will, of course, adhere to your request to remove any Knights of the Silver Rose from patrolling the streets of Beregost. The Knights of the Silver Rose will only enter the township to make purchases, seek healing within the Temple of Lathander, running of errands, or passing through to reach further lands.

I am disappointed that the offer to aid the suffering people of Beregost has gone unanswered, and even has been met with ultimatums. The citizens suffer greatly, unfortunately for them, at large due to the current administration denying help from those who would offer it at no cost to them, in fact, at cost to those even offering the help.

My letter may ring bitter, but I hold no ill towards you, only disappointment that the people will not receive what is due them. Should the decision be amended, and our Order allowed to offer its support, you are welcome to send word to the Order of the Silver Rose Keep.

May the Lady of Strategy guide you.

A missive is returned by runner to the Temple

Brothers Thomas Marlowe and Eldarian Al',maire

It is with heavy heart that I must inform you that I, nor any of the Knights of the Silver Rose, will be permitted, per the orders of the Governess, to patrol the township or offer our support in its defense against the many injustices the people have been enduring. I am deeply saddened by the decisions of the town's current administration, but we will comply with it. I appreciate greatly the offer of your support to me and my Knights. I hope the current situation of the town soon improves and the people's suffering lessened.

May the Morninglord bless you.

Another letter arrives for Aaron Lyonaler:

Sir Aaron Lyonaler,

We are sad to hear that you will not be able to aid us in maintaining order in the town of Beregost. We would remind you that there are other ways to aid people in need, however, and we hope you will not take the lady governess's refusal to accept your help as a sign that you should entirely ignore the plight of Beregost moving forward.

We hope you and your brothers-and-sisters-in-arms will stand with us should this town and its people ever be in need of you.
