Background:
Halbert was raised in the village of Corm Orp, a charming young rascal who lacked the focus or desire to finish out his life as a farmer (as his father was before him). At a fairly young age he left and headed west to the great city of Waterdeep among a traveling merchant’s caravan.
Motivated by a hunger for adventure and coin, he had dreams of becoming a powerful wizard and in fact was, for a time, apprenticed there to a middling wizard of little import and lesser talent. While serving as his apprentice he made the acquaintance of several others who also had dreams (delusions?) of grandeur. They would meet in the Yawning Portal at night and swap tales they had heard from their more-experienced masters. Eventually their words turned to deeds as they each left their masters in turn, formed a new adventuring company (The New Gallants – so named another member’s father’s old band), and struck out on their own.
What started well enough soon ended in tragedy. Of the six founding members only Halbert remains. What started as a drunken dare to enter Undermountain quickly turned into a life altering event that changed Bert forever. Scattered by Vampires and then hunted by drow slavers, Bert never saw his friends again. When he was finally found and brought to safety he had been wandering for days, alone and scared. He quickly left his dreams of riches and power behind and headed straight home to Corm Orp.
Upon his arrival he found that his father and mother had both died of a wasting disease, their farm given over to the church of Sheela Peryroyl. Never feeling more alone, he was taken in by an elder servant of the church and taught the ways of the land, and the love of ale and revelry.
Many years later, he now wanders the areas between Corm Orp and Baldur’s Gate, checking in on local farmers, aiding travelers, and learning much about the world at large. His favorite settlement, and one he holds dear to him for reasons unknown, is the village of Ulgoth’s Beard.
Within the village Bert can often be found fishing lazily in the pond or on the beach. When he is not relaxing he is aiding farmers with their livestock and crops, or aiding the villagers or visiting sailors with whatever ails them.
A common customer are those sailors that come to shore at 'Tha Beard' after long travels. He is known to keep a healthy supply of citrus mold and sympathetic smiles to cure them after they have visited 'Old Gerdy' ashore. He is often found on the shore with a lit pipe and a roaring fire.
Goals:
To both forget his past indescretions, and to atone for what he sees as his failure to help his parents. He still holds the wandering spirit he was born with, but now seeks to aid others and share with them the accumulated wisdom of many of his life’s failures.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Any of ‘The New Gallants’ may remain out there, somewhere. He may be drawn in any plot that threatens the livelihood of area villagers, or Ulgoth’s Beard itself. He dabbles in alchemy, fishing, healing, and is general that fat little Halfling that is always wandering about.
