Memoirs of a King

Unread post by Assad »

I have only been in the area surrounding Baldurs Gate for a few days and can sense that this is where I need to be right now. It will be a fresh beginning for me. Many of the people I have met here are kind and giving of themselves.

On my way south of Baldurs Gate I had a few run ins with bandits. I met a man named Taskan along the road and together we found a bandit encampment and took care of them. I can tell that my skills will be useful to the people of this region in making their communities a better place to live. I’ve also already encountered goblins and orcs. Danger seems to abound along the travel roads here in far greater numbers than by Neverwinter.

I met a woman named Meren who I hope to become greater friends with. We travelled to Beregost and Nashkell together and saw the sun rise from the mountains.

Upon my return from the south, I was finally able to begin what I came here to do. I met with Sir Sigel, Knight General of the Order of the Silver Rose. Apparently Captain Winters from Neverwinter sent a letter telling the Order of my arrival. I could tell Sir Sigel is a valiant man. I am sure that there is much I will learn from him during my time here. During the course of my interview, he taught me the ranking structure of the Order, and what will happen if I am found eligible to join. I hope that I am. It would be an honor to serve alongside such men and women that the Order attracts. If I am admitted, I will become a squire. It will be a little strange because I was a sergeant in the Neverwinter Guard only a few weeks ago. However, I trust that whatever Knight I am assigned to will have much to teach me, and I will try to be teachable.

I hope I am admitted in to the Order so that I can begin work here immediately. I am coming to love the people here already. Nothing is greater than serving a people you love.

I have been accepted into the Order. I am excited because my mentor is Lady Laura. I feel that she is the best mentor available. She was the mentor for Sir Siger many years ago. I know that there is much I will learn from her.
I am finally able to go to work here and begin laboring on behalf of the people. I've had a few encounters with orcs east of the Friendly Arm Inn. Now Lady Laura has commissioned me to go to the bottom of an abandoned mine in the Cloakwood to investigate rumors of evil lurking about. Hopefully it will be just that: rumors. But if not, I will do what needs to be done.

After studying the Code of Conduct for the Order of the Silver Rose for many days, and pondering upon his experiences in the Order thus far, William writes the following:

I have spent the past few days pondering the relationship between duty and selflessness and it seems to me that the two are closely linked. I define duty as fulfilling my legal and moral obligations. This two-pronged sense of duty is what helps formulate my actions. I believe that rule of law exists to create peace and order, thus my duty to respect the laws of the land is set in place. Selflessness ties into the second part of duty, my moral obligations.

The Code discourses my duty to protect the innocent, to help the sick and the poor, and to use my time and wealth for the building up of the greater good. I saw the power of selflessness while on patrol with Lady Angelina in Baldur’s Gate. We brought resources for the sick and downtrodden. To see their faces light up was truly a reward as we offered simple items to them such as medicines for their children, blankets, or baskets of food. As one who has now sworn my life in protection of these good people it is my duty to serve them in such ways.

It is also my duty to fight for them. Most of my patrols have been spent south of the Friendly Arm Inn, investigating Tradeway banditry in that region. I believe that my efforts have helped make travelling a little safer for those who use the Tradeway.
I believe that each act I perform that makes life easier and safer for the people of the Baldur’s Gate region is a direct fulfillment of my duty. I also believe it is an act of service, a selfless act. Indeed, the continual and daily performance of my duty is in itself a selfless act; sacrificing of myself on behalf of the greater good.

I have come to ask myself two questions daily:
Have I done any good in the world today? Have I helped anyone in need?

William King writes a letter to his good friend and lifetime mentor, Captain Winters, of the Neverwinter Guard.

Captain Winters,

How goes the work in Neverwinter? I hope that things are well. I hope the men are safe on their patrols.

I trust that Talia Nethrans’ cat still gets stuck in her tree every few weeks?

The work here is very busy. The region around Baldurs’ Gate is even more dangerous than that of Neverwinter. My skill with the scimitar has grown even more here than on my journey to study the weapon with Mu’awiya tribe in Calimshan. Though sadly, my skill has grown out of combat and not just training.

The stories we heard when I was still in Neverwinter of a black orc war seem about to reoccur. They have returned again and I have already crossed blades with them on numerous occasions. The tales of their skill were not exaggerated. Our most skilled men in the Neverwinter guard would struggle with them, sir.

They have taken the town of Triel, as I am sure you have heard rumors about by now. The stage is set for war and I find myself in the middle of it. I would have it no other way as it is my honor, duty, and responsibility to protect the people of the land. Remember what my father used to always say to the men before patrols? “Most people are sheep. There are many wolves out there who want to eat those sheep. Men, we are sheepdogs. We live to confront the wolf.”

You will be pleased to hear I have been promoted to Knighthood within the Order. It is a great honor to serve with these good men and women. They are of the highest caliber of personal character and I can think of no others more prepared for the challenges that lay ahead of us. Do not worry for me, I am in good hands.

William King ends the letter with a quote shared between William, his father, and Captain Winters,

Fight the good fight and confront the wolf, sir.

Captain Winters,

I have arrived back to the Silver Rose Keep safely. It was an uneventful journey with little trouble. Again, I appreciate how you began organizing everything from my fathers' second will so that it was easier for me when I arrived in Neverwinter.

It was refreshing to go on a patrol with the men for old times sake.

Now that I have returned I plan on staying getting straight to work for the people here.

Without going in to too many details in an open letter it is quite clear that many new evils have surfaced in the short months I've been away.

Fight the good fight and confront the wolf, sir
