Unlock SHOUT!

Unread post by jclay65 »

Can we please open the shout option to everyone. Maybe just test it out for a week and see how it goes. I know for my play style it would save me a lot of time. Can't hurt to give it a try!

What would you need it for? I honestly don't understand how it could fit a playing style...

Please no. There isn't a reasonable in character way to casually converse with the entire world at once.

How about we disable shouts altogether?

I think it’s necessary for DMs. Especially in informing the player base about events starting or gearing up to start. How else do you get an event started in a reasonable amount of time?

It’s also nice when a DM pops in and lets people know they are available for technical service. I’ve often had minor issues that I don’t want to bother a DM with when they are busy actually DMing. I know this is true for a few others as well.

It works fine as is. No need to break it in one direction or the other.

To be devil's advocate:

I would imagine shopkeepers and such could some sort of "advertising" service.

Which imho could be done by tying an NPC to be able to make shouts, and paying them like 10K gold allows a certain CD-key owner to make a single shout, with a cooldown of 6 hours.

I think it would devalue ICness of our setting even further, unless such "shouts" are only hearable within populated regions like all of BG + Farmlands and not across entire server.

Localized "shouts" might add value to RP. So long as they only went as far as a single area map. Just unidentified shouting (i.e., no name tag) and the direction it's coming from maybe?

Global shouts would probably get annoying after the twentieth "I'm dead at troll cave can someone come rez me?" Or the fourth rant from xXSephirothXx about how the DMs can't ban him, for he is a pro hacker and he is an invincible god among men and his father invented the Internet so now he's "going to ban the whole DM Team from the Internet!!!"

Bringing in the old "HEAR-YEE HEAR-YEE" guy (From the original BG 1 game  ) would be awesome.
And setting a prize on "hireing" him and his NPCrunner-network to spread a message across say, BG, FAI, Beregost and Nashkell (Read: up and down the tradeway) would, perhaps, insure that people mainly used the feature for IG stuff.

I see no harm in giving it a test run. Might even yield some help information in developing a town crier type system. This community is pretty good at policing itself, if it get out of hand it can always be turned off.

My character Harold was a "Crier for Hire" many times, and was paid IC to stand in the square and either promote sales, promote guilds, or spread rumors.

I dont see how allowing shouts would fit into a "play style" unless your play style is OOC. Plenty of things that can be done IC should be done IC.

((This is an opinion.
Global shouts are usually used to troll, OOC chat, and spam trade offers (usually in mmos). For an RP servers they're incredibly disruptive when they're available to players.

NPC criers are fairly frequently abused and godmodded into behaving inappropriately via emote injection. Meaning, people employing the npcs can add emotes to "make" npc gesture and behave in some (likely inappropriate) way, and since npc doens't understand what it is speaking, there's a great potential potnetial for messing with people.

For advertisements, we already have the forums and the boards we see in cities--unless shouts for players can be localized to a single area, I would highly recommend against it. The Underdark is included in the DM shouts too so if the shouts are server-wide, things might get a little confusing.

There's also the spam and trolling other people have mentioned. I'm not even sure if a localized shout is reasonable either, even for being a town crier. If you're in a high-traffic spot and shouting the same thing over and over, someone is bound to hear it.
