DM Rumors of Roaringshore

Unread post by DM Protector »

Word quickly finds the ears of even the most hidden of citizens in Roaringshore. It doesn't take much for someone relatively unknown to become the talk of the day.

[Rumors of Roaringshore]

A man has been found whitin the Broken Gobelet tavern, in the fighting pits area. He was bleeding and would probably have died if some drunken sailor wouldn't have brought him up. Mondain healing was enough to stabilise him, and mug of ale's smell enough to wake him up, even though the man had lost a lot of blood.

Few words could have been heard from him.
"It was that lass, Morticia.. And the other wierd hooded lass with the glowing katana... Damn, if I get mah hands on that katana wieldin' one, she'll learn what a real man is. Scary wench, blar.. Gimme more rum, damnit! Don't yah see I'm about to die?"

The gossips speak of this man as Vic Shipsail, one of the crewmate of the Hellstorm Crew.

[Rumors of Roaringshore]

A man named Brad, rumored to be a filthy adventurer from Baldur's Gate and an usual customer of the Elfsong tavern has been hanged by the feet near the docks, hands tied up, with his face slightly sliced to let some blood flow, and then slowly taken down, face first, into a box full of dire badgers.

It is said that the man could be heard yelling even on the boats near Roaringshore.

The high Captain, Cyrano Ambrosio, said a few words before ordering the pirates to lay down the man to his death.

"And this is what it cost for anyone who'd like to say lies about my daughter. Now, enjoy the show."

It is said that the badgers even ate the man's skull when he was pulled up.

[Rumors of Roaringshore]

Rumors spread about a messy event that took place in the Broken Gobelet, then at the docks of Roaringshore today.

Many pirates witnessed the event, as the parlay were done publicly at a table of the Broken Gobelet.

The gossips speak of a man reputed to be a Morninglord, having parleys with the Captain Kalma Hellstorm at a table. Few words were exchanged, the Captain asking a lot of gold to hand back the corpse of a single knife-ear, who suposedly was in a group who attacked the captain in earlier event. After they seemed to agree on the terms, the captain spoke of a public lashing, before selling the elf to the Morninglord, as a punishement for the previous attack.

Gossips speak of the morninglord as being furious about the lashing. During the event that took place at the docks, a man came to the Hellstorms and ordered him to stop. The rumors says that what followed was a messy rumble, and that blood flowed everywhere until the enforcers came and asked the Hellstorms to clean their mess.

What happened with the elves afterward is a mystery to most pirates.

Zombie!

Image

A zombie was found shambling near the decks of Roaringshore. At first, sailors thought it was a drunken lass and tried to flirt her. When the first one got bitten though, the enforcers came by. It didn't take long before the enforcers killed the strangely quite pretty undead, and tossed the body over a boat in the sea. Rumors start to spread about the return of Captain Muck and his filthy cursed crew, who disapeared almost half a year ago. No one seems to have seen the man, though.

Rumours are starting to head out of the Broken Goblet. A Grand Tournament, including betting, drinking and bloodshed is apparently going to take place in Roaringshore.

Rumours go around that the High Captains themselves have selected Champions amongst their crews to compete, and that the prizes are going to be enormous in size..

RAID ON ROARINGSHORE

A small armada of war galleons was seen suddenly being loaded up with Flaming Fist mercenaries and leaving port in the late evening. They sailed north.

Several hours later, in the dead of night, alarm bells rang out through the well known pirate alcove of Roaringshore as the armada approached. Several of the swifter and better prepared captains were able to hoist their sails and leave port with ships designed to outrun such large and cumbersome war galleons. The slower and more rum addled soon found themselves pinned by the blockade.

The rain fell hard that night, but the shelling from the armada upon the cliffs of Roaringshore fell much harder. Those who sought to leave by land found themselves confronted by a small contingent of Knights and Paladins, bolstered by a group of elves, cutting off their escape.

Battle raged throughout the night, but it did not take long for the Flaming Fist to secure the settlement. Several captive pirates were loaded upon the galleons as they sailed south, knowing full well that most would face the gallows on the morrow.

Word soon spread throughout Baldur's Gate and the Lords Alliance of the Duke's victory in cleansing roaringshore. While the impact on piracy was moderate, as those pirates who were cunning enough to survive the onslaught would double their efforts in the coming weeks as they sought to secure resources to rebuild Roaringshore, the moral boost and esteem earned by the Duke's and their allies was substantial.

News from Roaringshore

For those looking for gain in Roaringshore, they will not be disappointed. New opportunities abound among the vigilant for those seeking a position of power, or just the chance to strike back against the hated enemies - The Fist. There is much profit to be gained for those canny enough to see through the suffering surface of the town and prove their alliances and true intent, for only then will the true character of the town come to light.

The crew of the pirate sloop Hag's Claw roll into the Broken Goblet for some stiff drinks after their ship docks. Their tongues soon loosen, and they speak of the cruel fate of the ship's lookout on the final leg of their journey. At dusk, they all heard a blood curdling scream and looked up to see a black shadow encompassing the crow's nest. The lookout came falling out of the shadow and hit the deck, terminally. Murmuring prayers to Umberlee, they cast his body into the depths.

The (in)famous pirate captain, Kalma Hellstorm, was seen in the Broken Goblet Tavern, welcoming adventurers and opportunists willing to fight under his banner for some hard cash. Some say that the captain also signed a deal with an upstart pirate captain originating from Waterdeep.

Both the Seawolf and another brigantine, the Throat Cutter, are preparing their crews for an undetermined adventure.

The docks of Roaringshore saw the dreaded brigantine Seawolf, followed by a newer and never heard-of before ship named "the Throat Cutter" setting sail towards the South, destination unknown.

A few days later, both ships returned home, battered but victorious, their respective crewmembers rejoicing for all the "good loot" they've plundered in their latest joint adventure and heading towards the nearest tavern to squander all of their hard-earned coin.

The Hellstorm and Throat Cutter pirates alike can be seen inside all the seedies tavern of Roaringshore singing a little tune a bard of Roaringshore made to commemorate the adventure...

A skirmish between rival pirates took place out to sea near Roaringshore today. Such things are not unusual on the high seas, yet this was an unusual skirmish: It was in full view of the residents of Roaringshore, who turned out in large numbers to watch; it was fierce, with one side clearly eschewing loot in order to humiliate its opponent; and chiefly, because the captain of one of the sides was none other than the Reaver, the feared High Captain of Roaringshore known as Karghuth.

The battle took place at dawn. Karghuth's great, predatory galleon, the Maw, was towing a fat little merchant ship which had been taken as a prize. Out of the morning mists came three fast sloops, each flying a pennant bearing the symbol of a golden scorpion tail. Bystanders weren't able to name whose symbol this was.

Two of the ships engaged the Maw in a darting battle of manoeuvre, which the heavier ship was ill suited for. That said, although Karghuth was denied the bloody boarding actions he so craves, the torrent of missiles did great damage to the attackers.

Meanwhile, however, the third ship went straight for the captured merchant ship, boarding it and overwhelming Karghuth's prize crew. Strangely, the attackers then returned to their own vessel and all three corsairs let out their sails and made haste to flee.

It was then that the merchant ship exploded in a great ball of flame. Some say the Reaver's roar of rage could be heard over the sounds of the explosion. Clearly the attackers came not for plunder, but something else.

When the Maw pulled in to dock, High Captain Cyrano Ambrosio was waiting with a large number of his crew, drawn up in a disciplined line. While the commotion on the docks at the excitement drowned out the words the two men called to each other while Karghuth disembarked, the slow, sarcastic clapping with which Cyrano greeted his fellow High Captain were very clear in intent, as where the roars of anger issuing forth from Karghuth.

Violence was only averted when the Pious, High Captain Rensby Caine, arrived with his men; and the three high captains retired to his ship to discuss matters.

More rumours trickle in, as other pirates return from voyages, of attacks by ships flying the golden scorpion tail pennant. Attacking ships bound for Roaringshore, laden with spoil, they are ruthless in the attack but do not press when they have the advantage.

Some of the pirates whisper of this threat being bands of mercenaries hired by the Dukes; some whisper of a Zhentarim take over; others think the attackers are local, a direct challenge by one of the High Captains to the others; yet more postulate some great pirate warlord moving his fleet into the region, like the once-legendary Black Alaric of the Nelanther Isles.

Broken Goblet

A newly returned pirate from the seas, Larry, strode inside the Broken Goblet and accused one of the patrons, Elfred, of taking care of his wife's needs a bit more than what had been asked for whilst he was gone. Another patron at the table threw up his arms and walked away, clearly believing that marital issues was not worth spilling blood over. One was remaining, Alkirk, who was shifting uncertainly in his chair as he tried to grasp the situation. Larry allowed little time for that and leaped over the railing and threw himself at Elfred. Elfred had produced a dagger from his boot which he stabbed Larry with. Alkirk stood up and then smashed his chair over both Larry and Elfred. The two of them went down, unconscious with Larry bleeding badly and Alkirk standing above wondering what the hells just happened.

During the same time, a fight broke out at the bar with a half-elven woman smashing her tankard down on another woman's head. The fighting spirit spread out and as more people entered the Broken Goblet, there was a great confusion as to what was going on. Some cared little while others were trying to distance themselves. Larry and Elfred were both kicked at for unknown reasons whilst unconscious, Larry reported later to have died from his wounds. Elfred and Alkirk made it away with no more than bruises and broken ribs.

Captain Pike, the bar keep of the Broken Goblet, was said to take little interest in the ongoings but when a woman used sparkling magic Pike demanded her taken care of. It was then settled with coin. He made it clear that displays of magic was not welcome in the tavern. Despite Captain Pike's words, another man used healing magics and was thrown out for it. The fighting spirit dwindled away as Captain Pike set things right and went back to pouring up bad ale like nothing had happened.

Rumours trickle in with more returning pirate captains; of fast ships flying the Scorpion pennant harrying their vessels, although not risking direct battle with heavier ships.

More worrying are the captains expected back into port who are overdue...

There is talk now that this is the beginning of some form of blockade. But by who?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another brawl occurred in the Broken Goblet today. Its said High Captain Karghuth watched a brawl between an infamous captain and one of his former crew, before calling for them to "make it serious".

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, The Black Stag, the vessel of High Captain Cyrano Ambrosio, remains in port. Its always a time of tension when The Black Stag is docked at the same time as High Captain Karghuth's Maw. Strangely, however, the two crews seem to be going out of their way to not annoy each other.
