Summer Games

Midsummer 1357

Baldur's Gate

Image

The church of Tymora, and the city of Baldur's Gate invites you all!

People are what make any city or land come alive. Nobles may rule, adventurers might defeat great evils, and heroes may be remembered for their sacrifices. But it is the people, who make all these things possible, and worth the effort. Ordinary people and commoners, who, despite the trials of these contested lands, continue to make a living here. Stable hands, millers, carpenters, shipwrights, soldiers. The list is long, and all have suffered in recent years. Yet they remain. They persevere, and are the unsung heroes of society.

It is time that we honor them.

The Summer GaMes aim to do just that.

Days of festivities and merriment during the Midsummer weekend of 1357 to honor the common man and woman, whom have endured so much.

Performances, carnival rides, game booths, and tournaments will be the order of the day for the entire weekend. With enough food and drink to ensure that no one goes hungry or thirsty!

The Summer Games are proposed and organised by the church of Tymora, her allies, and the dukes of Baldur's Gate. With all proceeds from the fair given to charity for the benefit of the common people.

Should you or your organisation wish to participate in the fair, please contact either Freya Evans, or Adrian Baker at the church of Tymora in Baldur's Gate.

(( July 30th to August 1st, maybe shorter, depending on how many helpers we find ))

(( If you wish to aid in the preparation or execution of this event, please either find us in game, or RP it in this thread. ))

// Edit: Accidently put in a start on Wednesday instead of Friday. Corrected.

It is barely two days after the posters have gone up, before the first flurry of activity for preparations truly begin.

Spending a few hours at the Church of Tymora in Baldur's Gate, Adrian is seen headed for the farmlands just north of the city. With him he carries a large assortment of measuring sticks, varying pre-measured lengths of rope, and various other tools for plotting out grounds.

Making his way to the large plot of land allotted by the Dukes for the Summer Games Fair, Adrian sets about measuring out and divying up the area. Small flags on metal spikes are driven into the ground to mark out thoroughfares, booth sections, food and drinks stands, the large stage for performances, and a host of other things.

The entirety of his day is spent on this one task of many, and it is several hours after sunset before Adrian finally return to the Church of Tymora. As the hour approaches midnight, couriers are summoned to the church, and soon after sent all over the city to ensure that letters of various request are delivered and waiting at their respective destinations before the sun rises.

The past few days have seen a flurry of activity at the Fair area. Mainly in the form of material deliveries for the construction work that is to be had in preparing the Fair proper. Hired workers haul crates full of rivets, iron nails, and tools; while others cart in loads of lumber, linens, tents, and food and drinks for everyone participating in the project. During the few times when the weather holds dry, a perpetual cloud of dust can be seen at the site, if one were to climb the city towers to look in that direction.

Anyone visiting the area will often find Adrian moving between place or another, as he attempts to delegate work, keep on top of rising issues, handle correspondence at a hastily-constructed field-office, and in general try to keep things moving forward at all times. Like the many workers, he too leaves the site every day covered in dust, dirt, and sweat.

Another tenday of activity has passed at the upcoming Fair grounds.

Guided by Adrian, and a few hired talented foremen, the hired workers have been hard at work shaping the land to their needs. Several tonnes of stones have been dug up and moved. Even more tonnes of dirt, soil, and grass moved to provide a more even grounds to make traffic flow more easily. Pegs connected by a few miles of string have been driven into the ground to mark out individual areas; along with the expected dirt paths between them.

The small on-site office has been moved, and expanded upon to accommodate the hired foremen too. Close by several field kitchens have been put together to feed the many hungry and thirsty workers. Workers, whom now work in three shifts, including midnight to dawn! Luckily the grounds are far enough removed from the city that the most anyone can notice is dim flickering torchlight during nights where the sky is clear.

As the day draws to a close, approaching midnight, an exhausted, but smiling Adrian leaves the office in the capable hands of the nighttime foremen, and makes his way back to the Last Anchor at Ulgoth's Rest for some well-earned rest. Walking with him are a handfuld of couriers. Each is given sealed packages, and a handsome pay in gold. Enough so that when Adrian finally collapse into his bed, he does so safe in the knowledge that those messages will reach their intended recipients before the break of dawn.

Anyone visiting the grounds will find a rough layout already in place, as indicated by the pegs and strings in the ground.

Come eveningtide a lightly freckled woman, who looked like she had been wandering in the sun for quite a bit, walks through the farmlands just north of the city of Baldurs Gate. She stops at a convenient turn to get an overlook over the premises for the upcoming Fair and then thoughtfully gazes up at those brilliant pearls of the nighttime already appearing on the skies turning a black velvet. Not long after she claimed the grass to sit in with both letter and journal to jot ideas down. It was not till a whole candlemark past midnight she packed up to disappear down the road again...

In any case first adverisements were posted. In each public place there was a poster, that announced that martial arts. But it was just one snippet of The MIdsummer faire as a whole. More was yet to come. But friends of tournamants may not be disappointed! No date was set yet, but curious Misummer lovers may get a first glimpse:

Just a few hours later

The same two Ladies paid a visit in the Northern Farmlands, talking to a Lady owning a little Farm. Some freindly words and coins were exchanged, negotiationms and preparations were beginning. A ginger haired human Lady and a small almost elven looking one, could be seen going in and out there.

Also more flyers and poster were spread. In every public place it could be seen. Food lovers would soon be served with the best and most delicious baked wares.

The Midsummer Fundraiser Bake Sale began slowly with no attendees for the first candlemark, but eventually several flocked to the booths full of freshly baked things. The door from the farmhouse kept swinging open with fresh goods to re-stock the merchants shelves. A well known baker by the name of Nathan Fryar called his suspicions on the baked goods being poisoned loudly to the crowd. Whether he meant to be a heroine or a rabble-rouser is unknown, but the curious coincidence of the poisoned goods being every other baked treat than the ones he himself were selling was noted by some citizens... There have been no cases of poisoning reported since the Fundraiser... The amount of 42.000 gold were raised for the fair.

Midsummer is coming!

Rumour has it that the fair si starting soon. The first day will begin with Music, it seems like and end and yet a beginning at the same time. This may explain why someone chose cherry blossoms in Summer to symbolize this. Flyers are being ahnded out. Also whereever there's a public place, there will be poster.

In the days leading up to the Fair, a slightly sunburnt Ronja travels from North to South with a sense of urgency. Her boots plant firmly onto the ground in great speed as she passes by any familiar face, to only offer them very brief greetings. Though orders were put in, not all gave response in time, but such was the risk with the short period to plan they all had. Luck had it that she met a fisherman by the name of Westby Bartram roaming the docks of Baldur's Gate. He was making several deliveries and just so happened to be willing to depart with several crates of clams, bay shrimp, crabmeat and cod fish for a spectacular price, considering the amount she was after. What followed was a long, and slightly chaotic day under the sun within the Gates, rolling a wheelbarrow behind her to find what remained on a long shopping list.

That poor wheelbarrow creaked several crates of beverages from Warriors Rest and all the way toward Baldur's Gate the following day. After this delivery Ronja flopped back onto the green grass in some shade to lay there for a while to breathe the exhaustion out. It wasn't until she had lapped all the water out of her waterskin that she rose to make her way to the next wagon driving toward Lion's way for the day.

Somewhere around Sundown, the folks preparing around the Fairgrounds might also bear witness to a Caravan arriving from the North, carrying positively enormous crates on two Horses, escorted by two handful of Exhausted-seeming Militiamen and a somewhat surly Talio in darkened Armor. He would leave the Crates secured nearby his guards and the other deliveries, and go off to find Freya with a slip of paper to sign for both of them about a delivery of two times fifteen thousand sausages, with two smaller boxes containing the spice bags also included in the order.

"Gotta keep it official and above the table." Would be his comment if asked why that signature was so necessary that he'd be willing to scour the site for Freya.
Once he inevitably would have caught her, he would let his soldiers have a few hours off while finding some way to perhaps help with the setting up, in mostly just menial and boring ways, before regretfully scampering off to lead the small group of Militiamen further South towards Warriors Rest.

It has been some days since Adrian was last spotted at the fair grounds. Rumor has it he was attending some personal affairs, which included travel away from the Coast. Now back again, however, he is seen quickly being brought up to speed by the other members of the fair planning group. Words are shared, hugs exchanged, and letters and notes read through.

"You d-did some fine work progressing all o-of it, while I was away. Like I k-knew you would." He praises them all. Freya in particular, having had to juggle his portion of management on top of her own. It is with a soft smile on his lips that Adrian resume final preparations, so Freya can have that bit longer to get ready for her performance once the fair is opened. Only a few hours before that too!

Freya would thank everyone with a hug. "Thank you all for the support, you're great. Yes, Adrian, this is as much as i can do. The reat is up to you and....you have some wonderful helpers still with you." With that she would fly to her preparations. Once she can be seen, teleporting in a silver light from one merchant to the other. Back to the North Farmlands just in time before the oven in the farmhouse would be free.

All well behaved she came in royal blur Tymoran Lucky Maiden robes. along with a silver-white horse. Donating some food for the other horses at the farm, she tied him and grinned* "It's good you're a gelding, you know. At least you can't do anything with the females here, i would have to pay for in a few moths." She pats the horse an takes a big plump saddle bag from it.

Image

Then she would rush into the house to join Ronja for the cooking and baking. Those who know her, cam tell by the said saddle bag, can tell: She is up to something!

What it may be? One will have to follow the posters to see in short time....

The first day of the Baldur's Gate Summer Games Fair was a resounding success.

It wasn't long after the grounds had opened to the public that the first high-profile visitors began to arrive. Following their wake, or sometimes running ahead of them, were large groups of the common people. Drink and food stalls were crowded right away. What better way to start a festival after all than to have cake, and drinks both alcoholic and sweet?!

The majority of high-profile visitors turned out to be adventurers. Around whom the groups of commoners gravitated. Especially once a certain Derik Ranloss graciously paid a large sum to the food and drink stalls management. Thus paid forward, food and drinks were handed out in large quantities. Not only among the high-profile visitors, but even more so the commoners! If someone else was paying, then why wouldn't a simple farmer enjoy a more expensive imported beer over the regular local brews they could get anytime they wanted anyway? Many certainly thought that way, and the donation was rapidly spent.

Bellies full of cakes, pies, and drinks, everyone's attention soon turned to the main event of the opening day. Famed and renowned singer Freya Evans was giving a small concert in the name of love and good fortune! Many of the high-profile visitors spoke highly of her as she took to the stage; thus drawing a much larger crowd from the commoners, whom had rarely been able to attend such a performance.

The lithe woman's voice soon entranced the crowds, with many emotions playing freely on the faces of most. While both the tune and lyrics were sometimes sad or even upsetting, they always returned to be upbeat, happy, and hopeful. As the performance caried on many took to dancing. Either on their own, with friends and partners, or whomever was close enough to be caught up in the dancing energy settling over the crowd.

Eventually the performance came to a halt. And though shouts of encore were many, they were politely declined. Freya had other matters to attend to, and after managing the fair preparations without her partner-in-crime Adrian for some time, she had her rest. Food and drink contiued to flow for hours after the performance ended, and talks about the morrow began circulating.

Games had been promised! And a market too!
