Damien Pascal - Corruption from Within.

Unread post by Kiran » Thu Mar 31, 2016 5:59 pm

Drip... drip... drip

There would be no sleep tonight, the ferocious downpour of rain alone would not be what only kept the old man awake, his thoughts a whirlwind of anguish and confusion. He filled yet another glass of cheap liquor to the brim, how many had he had now, four.. five? He would stir it in silent contemplation, heating it with the flesh from his hand as he thought over what had happened the last couple of days, one name constantly echoing in his head... Felix..

Letting out a groan of pain, the old healer looked down in surprise to see the shattering and spilled remains of his glass in his hands, his knuckles white as he had crushed it in the palm, shards of glass deeply embedded into the ancient flesh, blood flowing freely, dripping onto the floor.. dripping

The previous night had been normal, he had been hired by a man called Tyrial to aid in him robbing the crypt of Gulikyen of its recent troves and treasure. A simple job, one he had performed previously. The duo would gear up in town and ready themselves before entering the sepulcher. Upon arriving the old man would bless and imbue his companions weapons, most importantly adding a faint glow to it as not only the shamblers and living dead could be a concern within the tomb, but darkness itself a enemy too.

"I knew as I entered something was wrong... something was terribly wrong"

Going over the first few minutes in his mind Damien recalled as they crossed into the tomb it was darker than usual, a eerie light permeating from the ancient walls and ceiling. A sudden screech of creatures long dead was the first thing the duo saw, then a tide was unleashed as they were being swarmed in the putrid masses of the undead. Luckily for Damien he was able to block the blows on his shields as the ancient swords bit firmly into the old metal, sending tremors of pain through the old mans arm as unholy strength met holy shield.

Tyrial however did not seem phased, with a grimace and grabbing his imbued warmace in a two handed grip he started to deliver a terrible retribution upon their cursed foe, a flurry of blows catching the ancient warriors off guard as they started to crumble one by one into a decaying pile of rusted armour and old weaponry... the warrior overpowering them even in their great numbers until there was only him and Damien left...

But it was far from over.

The undead kept coming, Damien raising his arms towards the oncoming horde of flesh and rotting bone, attempting to slow them down with his spells, one skeleton completely bursting into flames, sending others over the side of the ledge in a shock-wave, however for each one that fell two or more would take its place, Tyrial clearly exhausted from the previous skirmish took a stance and started dismantling the creatures one by one, holding them at a closed corridor.

They started coming from below and above... skittering, crawling as they closed in

The creatures were slowly overwhelming the staunch adventurers, Damien falling to his knee's using his shield only as his mace was dropped from nerveless fingers, all energy spend by now as the fight had gone on for what seemed hours, leeching the old mans energery. Tyrial who was much younger still had some fight in him they started retreating backwards from the throng of zombies and skeletons.

But they were not alone with the undead

What Damien and Tyrial could only describe as divine intervention saved their life, a creature of pure light and wings flew down upon the undead, using its two handed sword to heave and cleave into the great mass, it's magics pushing the creatures off the ledges and into the abyss, it spoke to the duo, its voice penetrating through the fog and screams of the living dead horde which was approaching now once more in even greater numbers.

"Run, humans, I will hold them off, save yourselves!"

Needing little encouragement the duo did just that, Tyrialmainly dragging Damien out as the old man was beyond the brink of fatigue, leaving behind the divine creature to halt the progress of the horde..

They finally made it out into the darkness.. and there he stood...

"Felix..."

Damien whispered these words, eyes gone cold, body rigid as he thought back to it all...

Felix had agree'd to join them in the crypt, to perhaps aid the divine creature that had helped them. With his help they made easier work of the denizens of the ancient vault, finally slaying a arch lich to gain their treasure, by this point they had been over a hour in the crypt however, drained beyond mortal means, sweating and exhausted to the bone they gathered the coin from the crypt and then it happened..

A slow soft clapping could be heard, the sound not exactly applaud but more of a mocking jaunt...

"Good work mortals... you have shown yourself to be more adept than I anticipated, but no matter.."

Removing the shards of glass with a wince as more blood flowed through his fingers his eyes widened as he recalled the vampire, the ancient lord fiercely arrogant, knowing already it has the three men at it's mercy.. it started speaking, its voice soft and silky like honey to Damien, almost like rapture to his soul as he would be bend to his knee's the power of the creatures voice blanking out everything else.... however Felix and Tyrial used their last wind to charge at the abomination, almost surprising the ancient beast... But to no avail.

The two men were struck down in a maelstrom of teeth, fangs and unholy incantations, the creature a blur as it fought back leaving Damien bowed down before the fearsome predator, at it's mercy.. Time passed...

"You made a pact wiz it! That is the only way you could have Zhurvived!"

Felix uttered these words as he got to his feet, pointing his sword at Damien moments after recovering outside in the blazing sun, Tyrial slowly getting to his feet as well, perhaps more dazed than Felix who by now was shouting in Damien's face, sword pointed at him, Damien meanwhile shouting back in protest as he drew his mace... blood was going to be spilled...

"What is going on?"

The white figure of Kamal upon exiting the crypt after the others asked, seeing that both Felix and Damien was about to kill one another he quickly tried to find out what had happened.. and to stop the two men from killing one another..

"What did exactly happen...?"

Damien looked in the mirror as he finally removed the last shard of glass, binding his hands then chuckling if ironically to himself, placing his other hand on the hand that was bleeding and healing it instantly, only leaving behind some old crusty blood... The last words of the Vampire lord echoing in his head as he stares at the mirror for hours, seeing a old and tired man a long time beyond his prime..

"Would you like to hear my bargain... mortal?"

Damien continued to look into the mirror, staring into his own eyes...

My wife, she wouldn't stop crying and screaming in the middle of the night, I visit her grave and ask her to stop, but she won't listen.. the screams will never end.

Damien sighed softly, his body aching from yet another night filled with not sleeping, but constantly awakening to a small dark room, the candle at his side flickering with it's last breath, near the stump, the sight of that like a mans last dying breath, the old man shuddered knowing no sleep would occur this evening.

"I held her down with a halberd whilst we roasted her alive..."

The old man frowned as he watched the gathered group of people, one he knew already, Noela the slightly odd arcanist, others were strangers to him. They had found a girl who Noela later described as "Having arrived at the friendly arms inn, fallen over and then she died..." Later he would learn the name of the woman who had held the halberd, Isabella, Warden of Candlekeep. Speaking to all the witnesses present one at the time, the overall story seemed to be that the woman had died, but then tried to rise again and attack the people around her, though she never said anything, three of the witnesses noticed marks on the dead girls neck.

"You made a pact wiz it! That is the only way you could have Zhurvived!"

It couldn't be true... the creature had left the crypt and come all this way to feed when there was closer prey to it's home?

It was coming for him, he knew it. With panicked and hurried steps he went back to his room he looked once more into the faded mirror before him, the reflection of a tired old man past his prime once more evident with the heavy shadows under each eye, his skin thin, nearly transulent, the white teeth, the two fangs with blood dripping from them.

Drip... drip... drip

Damien let out a soul wrenching scream, the image before him blurring as he fell to the floor in a crash of armour and flesh, arms in front of him as if trying to protect himself with a ward...

"Would you like to hear my bargain... mortal?"

He was protected.

The Ebon Blade Mercenaries had accepted his application to join, the old man knew now his enemies could not just reach out and crush him like a piece of over ripe fruit, because if they did, it would reflect poorly on the capabilities of the Ebon Blade to protect one of their own and they would have to act in turn, not because they gave a crumb for the old man, but because they had a reputation to keep.

He was protected... for now

This very same protection helped him that very day, his face red with outrage and humiliation as he stood before the Warden of Candlekeep, Isabella, both of them throwing accusations back and forth, however what they were speaking of was one thing, but what they meant a totally different one as the people around the camp was unable to follow the real context of the heated talk, she seemed like she was about to attack, but perhaps she knew if she did, he was not the only one she had to deal with.

Felix had told her... she knew..

Isabella... that self righteous harlot, daring to accuse him.. accuse him of such things, in front of everyone!? Trying to even his breathing the old man looked down from his reflection in the foggy dirty mirror to his hand, a different glass now crushed in it, luckily no blood was evident as he had been wearing his metal gauntlets, recently returned from a skirmish in the crypts.

Looking back into the mirror his expression changed, a slight shift of facial muscle revealed something horrible on the old mans expression - an actual smile appearing as he recalled his conversation with Drogo, the plan was being arranged, the only witness would be taken care of, and she would learn her mistake, once and for all. The old man chuckled heartidly, though the mirth never really reflected in dead eyes, finding another glass and pouring himself another, sipping slowly...

"Damien, I need to talk with you.."

Hours before the first incident he had been stopped by the Captain of the Ebon Blade, Greil, to have a conversation about a certain meeting the Captain had been invited to and whether Damien had anything to do with it.

He had... every step of the way he had.. they needed the elves or else Soubar would be overrun, he already knew the Captain would never admit it, but he was a mercenary leader, the more of his men that died or were injured to the orcs the less profit he would make, the elves would prevent at least some of these casualties, but the Captain was too proud to admit it, especially with the bad blood between himself and the elves, however he had not been the only one to reach out to the elves according to Greil, Omar supposedly had also made moves to reach out to them...

If he was to stand out in the Ebon Blade and be protected from his enemies, Damien knew he had to do drastic things to first be noticed, and secondly appreciated. But.. had he overstepped already too quickly, had he made a mistake in sending those elves off into the woods with their messanges? Only the up coming meeting would tell.

And then Isabella would learn her mistake, they all would...

Finishing his drink, then looking to the empty bottle the old man sighed before finding his bed in a drunk haze, the room spinning momentarily before blissful exhaustion overcame him and he slept, nightmares as always following closely like dark tendrils creeping in his alcohol infused mind..

"And for those reasons... we cant let you get access to the library..."

Her words echoed softly in the small office, the smile she shared with her colleague did not however escape Damien as he looked from the one women to the other, seeing their small lifting of the lips, the obvious smirk as they told him he was not allowed to enter the library..

"We can however scribe any book you need.. I would be happy to do it myself.."

The woman Alexandra said it with a silent laugh, her eyes twinkling with mirth as she put the last dagger into Damien with her words, the old man could see the pleasure they had, denying him entry to the library, both her and Laitae who was sat opposite the old healer, her smile mimicking that of her colleague..

The Warden had to be behind this... he had asked to see her concerning the job, but Isabella according to all was "too busy" with important things to see him, yet people kept going in and out of the library... to speak with her... that is why they were there surely, to speak with the warden... what had that harlot told them?!

Damien had spent many weeks, no, months, searching for the creature that he and Felix had seen, the very creature that had caused this problem between himself and Isabella... but the search had been fruitless, a waste, a ghost story... perhaps what he and Felix had seen was a phantom, illusions, ideas created from two adventurers tired minds... but the bodies they had left behind, the countless bodies... surely it couldnt be a mirage...

The ancient healer had returned to Soubar to see if the Captain was still around, having no luck he ventured to the Friendly arms inn meeting Drogo whom already within ten minutes had agree'd for a tidy sum to keep to a story of why he had been absent, whatever that story was..

"Is there anything else we can do for you?"

They kept smiling their self righteous grins, their faces almost hiding the fact they were getting great pleasure from the time he had wasted knowing already on the offset he would never gain entry, not with the warden being who she was... but clearly also indicating this was his dismissal from the meeting, and oh the joy they had in doing so. This was not over, not by a long shot..

Later that night..

The old man could be seen speaking to some of the other men of the Ebon Blade in Soubar, the kind you would not consider introducing your mother to if you were a smart girl... The conversation was quiet as a description was given to the men and women present words such as around 5 foot 3 inches, young, describing a woman with short blonde hair, it being almost white, whom carried a satchel with a array of tools and most likely writing resources... finishing their drink the men and women went their separate ways, some with more coins in their purses, some with less...

It was good to be back.

Damien shakily took a glass of his favourite whiskey, gulping the first two glasses down in a hurry, however his hands kept shaking as he sat down on his cot, looking out of his small window into the oncoming darkness...

The old man sat in his room at the friendly arms inn, unable to sleep as his back was still on fire. He held a glass of whiskey, unusually full for this late in the evening... even after Greil had attempted to heal him it still ached... scars that would never heal, nor the humiliation he had felt.. he let out a visible shudder as he remembered the sounds and torture...

-CRACK!-

The whooshing sound of the whip opened up flesh, revealing bone as skin was torn from the old mans back, ripping it to shreds... unable to hold back the pain he screamed out in agony, curling into a fetal position as he lay on the floor gasping for breath, unable to keep the tears at bay as he whimpered like a child...

"Get up..."

Greil uttered those words in disgust, the already humiliated old man letting out a weak moan as he tried to lean over again, awaiting the second lash from the whip... Eleanor had wanted to do twenty lashes, but Greil seemed to think 5 would be enough...

"I want you to spy on your Captain, find out his weaknesses.."

The woman said this softly, standing at the haunted manor at the time Damien did not think much of it, his loyalty then to Greil rather impeccable, her sister at the time was watching on silently

"Some people want to see him hurt.."

-CRACK!-

The memory of the mansion and the woman came back to Damien in a glimpse as the pain of the second whip crack sent him unconscious for a brief moment, his face once more in the mud, his guts unable to be controlled as he threw up, screaming out in pain as the blow hit much harder than the previous one coughing and gagging as he struggled to remain concious from it, his whole body trembling in protest, wanting to shut down as the fierce pain started to send his mind into a spiral..

"She hated him... he had her friend executed, since then a lot of the elves wanted him dead or worse.."

The elf's voice was quiet, her features covered by a hood mainly, but the anger in her eyes were real as she told Damien this, her fist clenched as if she remembered being there.. At the time Damien thought little of it, just another person with a grudge against his Captain...

"Thats why they hate the Ebon Blade.."

Her words were the first he heard as he regained conciseness, he looked around himself, tears in his eyes from the pain and humiliation, some vomit stains still in his beard as he tried with all his might to get back into a position for the next blow.. he looked up to see the people gathered there... his eyes wide, pleading...

Eleanor simply stared at him in, almost not really seeing him, arms crossed... his gaze turned to Iglit who as always just stood there quietly, almost as if enjoying herself.. then Drogo... who had a smile on his face, a wicked smirk, almost as if he had planned this all along, as if this was the best practical joke ever... a slight wink to Damien followed as the old mans eyes widened, his humiliation complete... he tried to get back into a kneeling position, but just as he did the third whip crack struck... the searing pain sending his mind reeling.

"You know, there is a lot of people who want to see your mercenary group dead"

"The male elf said this absently, the two of them and his friend stood by the Crypts at the halfling village, casually talking, the old man would laugh at this and shrug it off, clearly the elves had a grudge, but then again so did everyone it seemed with everyone..

" You Should think of turning against him.. would make a lot of new friends that way"

Betray him... hurt him... destroy him.. kill him.. humiliate him!

The words echoed in the suddenly snapped brain of the old healer, his world spinning out of control as the pain was too much for him.. he was broken.

Hours later, the Captain had healed the old mans wounds and the meeting was underway, the talks of some kind of bounty was being discussed... The old man looked to his right, every eye that greeted him within the company smiled, mostly with pity, others with scorn or even hate at the mans weakness... Guy even snickered as he winked to the Lieutenant next to him, and Drogo... he merely shook his head when his eyes caught the old man, dissmising him for the pathetic creature that he was.. the pathetic creature... pathetic..Iglit never even bothered to look..

The old man sat in his room at the friendly arms inn, unable to sleep as his back was still on fire, holding a glass of whiskey... but in front of him were four.. no.. five little figures, one was smaller than the rest, one had a leaf for a cloak, one had badly cut pointed ears cut into it, the fourth had a leaf for a hood, attempt of making it look feminine perhaps was also done to it, if poorly. The fifth was like the fourth, female perhaps, but instead of a hood its top was blotched white perhaps to resemble some kind of hair?

The old man would look to the small fire he had placed, the flames tendrils dancing hypnotically casting wishful shadows over the small room,

-CRACK!-

The old man flinched, thinking another lash of the whip was coming his way, but he was still in the same room, the carved figurines in front of him, all five.. no.. there was only four.

The old man looked to his hand in confusion to see blood pooling there where he had crushed the figure of the man with the leaf for a cloak... he suddenly started laughing, tears streaming down his face as he chuckled, the noise echoing in the small lit room as the figure of the man with the leaf for a cloak lay crumbled in the old mans bleeding palm.

He continued laughing..

"Kill me..."

They both sat in the small office, the woman listening as the old exhausted man told her everything, eyes downcast, barely able to keep awake as his eyes were red from sleep deprivation, cloak soaked through from the earlier rain, IT WAS carefully arranged over the expensive chair.

"Please.."

His voice was pleading....But when he looked at her he saw the worst thing he could fathom... pity... pity for a man who had broken. One she once saw as a enemy, someone to despise and hate, now she just saw a broken old man looking for a way out.. and she pitied him.

"I won't..."

Her words made the man more hollow than before, he had nothing left now.. they were coming for him... he knew too much... they were coming.

"You can stay here.. no one would suspect you being here, When did you last sleep..?"

Isabella's words actually sounded to the old man as if she was slightly concerned for him, even after what he had told her, even after what he had admitted.. she felt something... for him?

Some hours passed as the old man drank away his nightmares in the tavern at Candlekeep, speaking to anyone nearby, whether they wanted to listen to him or not before passing out into a drunk oblivion.

Some hours later he would find himself awake, at his room at the friendly arms inn, a letter had been left to him by the innkeeper, the envelope was signed, the kiss of a woman on it, sealed by a lesser known symbol of of Sune... confused the old man ripped the letter open, staring at the contents in horror... he kept repeating the same line over and over again..

"There is another way... another way..."

He read the signature.. Adelaide..

The old man held his head as his hangover felt like it It was squeezing his brain til he could not it take anymore, he cringed as he read the contents over again, cursing loudly as he threw the offending piece of paper to the floor in a rage, his eyes wild as he recalled the talk he had with the woman in the temple at Candlekeep.. the Gem... the blades... the Thayans.. the woman had bewitched him, a sorcerer of some sort to make him speak of it all... she was a necromancer of the worst kind, she deserved death.

The old man would crunch up the paper, scowling as he thought of throwing it into the fire... but he reconsidered, a new expression that would take an outsider if looking at him by surprise.. a slight curve of a smile as he looked pensive, even thoughtful... he arranged the letter nicely once more in his hand and set out to find a certain elf...

The winds were howling, the three adventurers were setting off to cull the vampires at their mansion, having been told once more by the locals, sightings had become frequent once more, just a typical day on the coast. But sometimes things were not always as they seem... upon their way things changed.. dsrastically. The man in the hood carefully approached Kokronos, gently laying a hand on his shoulders trying to appease him with a soft tone.

"Come now my friend, think of all the gold and gems you will get for this one little job, they are only dwarves afterall, not humans like us?"

The man in the hood chuckled as he said this, smiling at the larger fighter.

Kokronos frowned, folding his arms stubbornly as he shook his head, clearly not buying the man in the hoods bluff, The man in the hood looked over at the old man in the heavy armour a slight nod shared as the shadowed man lunged towards Kokronos, stabbing for the weak part of his neck between helmet and armour. The hero was too quick, he lowered his head, the spike easily deflected by the more solid armour, a crack as the small blade broke easily on the helmet, a snarl could be heard as Kokronos took out his two handed weapon, looking from the old man to the man in the hood, knowing he was in a fight for his life.

The man in the hood swung his sickle in a brutal arc, aiming straight for the mans exposed neck, blood pouring out in torrents as he ripped the blade out with a quick flick of his wrist, a lethal blow by any standards, however Kokronos replied by yelled in rage, ignoring the wound almost totally as he swung his blade directly for the man in the hood, a quick flurry of blows were exchanged as the man in the hood knew he could not face this opponent by himself, backing away as he took cut after cut on his leather armour... luckily for him he was not alone

The old man charged at Kokronos, smashing his mace directly for the weak part of his shoulder breaking the links as a loud metallic thump echoed in the Cloakwoods.

Kokronos merely went into a further rage, bleeding profoundly now from another stab from the man in the hood, he brutally cleaved his sword towards the man in the hood, striking a brutal blow, the man having to retreat backwards, however he had focused too long on him..

A booming roar thundered in the cloakwood, wind howling and slapping at the tree's, Kokronos turned to the old man seeing him glow in a bright light, the fierce light being directed at him, screaming he charged at the old man, however it was too late, eyes wide he was slammed against a tree, the wind howling as the tree nearly snapped from the force... Kokronos screaming in outrage as his life was taken from him in the flash of a light... only dust remained..

The man in the hood looked at the dust before him, having drunk a potion to cure his mortal wounds he shook his head as he looked to the old man..

"That was a bit.. excessive?"

The old man just let out a shudder, looking at the pile of dust which used to be a young man, a hero, someone who had said no to what these two were too greedy to say no to... as his thoughts spun in confusion and weakness they were interrupted by a small creature..

"Well.. it looks like we have a deal then..."
The creature said, its yellow eyes glinting with malicious inteligence and perhaps a little fear as he looked to the two blood soaked men, its smile filled with rotten teeth as it shook the man in the hood's hand

The two now murderers did as they were asked, the reward substantial, the cargo was delivered...

Hours later the old man left, going back to his room he finally found some peace and quiet to reflect on what had happened, drink in hand he sipped from the pungent whiskey without really tasting it, its effects minimal as he was a hardened drinker, his eyes bloodshot... A knock interrupted his daze as the innkeeper held a letter for him... it was addressed to anyone in the Ebon blade, to give to the Captain...

Curiosity overtook the old man as he ripped the letter open, blinking in surprise at the sender, frowning at the content, enraged as he threw the glass he had in his hand against the wall, shards shattering into a thousand pieces. The old mans Eyes were fillied with rage... he packed some things and slammed the door behind him, the shards of the glass left there, broken, like him.

Many more hours later, far away from the friendly arms inn, the conversation he thought he would be having turned different, a man had joined them, the woman in question clearly looking up to this individual.. The men spoke, the old man the most... what was said stayed between them, however only one word echoed in the old mans head, one he never thought he would hear, especially after a day like this..

Redemption.

He took another sip of his whiskey, scratching his beard irritatingly. The old man was still shaking, in fact, he was trembling eyes wide as he licked his lips nervously, barely tasting the scorchingly strong alcohol as he sat in the Friendly Arms Inn, alone. With trepidation he finished his drink with a slight tremor in his hand, letting out a short shudder afterward...

*SLAM!*

*The old man jumped, reaching for his war-hammer and standing up, only to see a small gnome enter the tavern, brow raised as he watched the trembling old man tense, then watched him sit down as the gnome walked off with a shake of his small head, a slight tsk followed.*

The old man went back to his drink, seeing it was fully emptied he let out a weak sigh, watching the door nervously as he kept thinking of the the events that had transpired some hours earlier..

Greil places his hand on the old mans shoulder, eyes locked to his as he said the words softly

"I hope you have made the right decision Damien, I would hate if anything... bad should
befall you."

The old man barely got to react, mouth opening wordlessly before his old Captain left him standing there, shaking, only to be joined by two others who had been stood in the shadows... The old healer could not look away, but others did, or perhaps they chose to ignore what happened next. The old mans former Captain turned to him and smiled, placing his finger to his own throat and dragging it across in plain view from one side to the other. The old man knew others had seen but he also knew no one would do a thing.. some moments later Greil left the old man to be stood silently by the sun dial at the Friendy Arms inn, staring after his old Captain as he dispersed from sight.

He could feel those eyes...

Turning to his right a man in hood stood, staring at Damien, clearly watching his every move.. the old man knew he would not be able to leave the safety of the Friendly Arms Inn Tonight...

The room at the Friendly Arms Inn reeked of putrefaction, the elderly man was in his bed, hacking up phlegm by the ton, his cough worsening with every weak breath as sweat glistened on his wrinkly forehead. The old man would gasp for water which was given by the girl sat next to him, barely any of the liquid consumed before he was overcome by another fit of croaky coughing.

The girl, who was also ironically his patient would give a weak smile, her own health also worse for wear. She shook her head, seeing that the older man had gone from a slight cold in the morning to a full blown... something, the curse of the old perhaps? His skin and flesh seemed paler than usual, pupils dilated, the very smell of his skin that of illness.

Throughout the night the old man would speak to The girl in a weak tone, barely above a whisper, telling her to deliver certain letters and speak with some people on his behalf, the illness too much for him to even leave his room...

As the day and night progressed a large Dire wolf would be seen prowling outside the Friendly Arms inn, almost as if on guard of something, its large eyes going from the Inn back towards the dark wood surrounding it... a person might spot the fierce intelligence behind the creatures eyes as it watched each and every person walk past, in and out of the Inn

"Damien... "

The voice was soothing, friendly, the old man however could not quite place it, it echoed softly within the confines of his skull, calling him, encouraging him to come see her.. her voice could not be denied as the old man set out to find who the voice belonged to, blind to anyone in his path..

"Damien...?"

This voice he knew... he could hear the familiarity of the tone, a voice of slight puzzlement, however the other voice started to easily drown out the other, overpowering, softly demanding all of the old mans attention...

"Come to me Damien..."

The old man could not resist as he willingly followed the voice outside the safety of the Friendly Arms Inn he approaching the old wagon to the left. Slightly confused the old man looked around trying to find the woman's voice...

"Good Damien...you have done well, it will all be over soon"

Before the old man knew it a shadow had emerged, the figure blurring and shifting in the weak morning light, however even with the healers diminished vision he could see the outline of the guide of Candlekeep. Alexandra Keenan , she had a expression he had never seen before, her usual diplomatic visage gone with that of a vicious snarl. The sky suddenly darkened, her expression turning to that of delight as she sent a torrent of fire towards the old man, the inferno becoming a fierce maelstrom of death as it twisted and turned enveloping the old man, burning him alive. The old man cried out a pathetic ward, barely in time, smoldering the inferno surrounding him only to be met with a rock the size of a horse hurtling straight for him.

The shield the old man put up did little to stop the momentum of the flying object as he was knocked backwards, the bones in his arm broken into tiny shards, dirt and debris following in his wake as he barely remained conscious, flickering in and out of darkness... he was able to cast a quick healing spell on his arm, knowing it would heal poorly but also knowing he would need all his resources to fight against this creature.

Too late.

The monster that was Alexandra Keenan lifted the weakened healer in a crushing grip using the very earth as a large hand, her eyes boring into Damien's as she would lick her lips in anticipation, the giant hand would squeeze, pressure intensifying as Damien felt his ribs cracking, breaking... he couldn't do anything.. the pain was overwhelming, the old healer gasped for breath, however none was to be had.. the hand kept crushing him, his ribs snapping, he prayed to his god.. begging for help... his god as always did not listen to the healers dying plea..

Darkness... he could finally die...

The old man gasped for air... the pressure around his chest and ribs had suddenly stopped, he fell from the sky, caught in a pocket of wind and gently placed to the ground covered in a luminescent shield, sparkling with intense energy, the very fabric of it rippling and glowing. A scream was heard as the Shadow that was Alexandra Keenan was struck by bolts of lightning, the very ground surging with magic as a elven form came into the healers view, lightning circling him, making the very hairs on Damien's scalp stand up. The build up of energy became so powerful it felt as if the very air was alive with electricity. Sirion's started a barrage of spells against the shadow creature, smashing whatever shields or hindrances the shadow feebly put up to defend itself, the creatues face turning from delight to fear as the elf kept marching towards it, the very earth quaking with the magical assault he was hurling towards it.

The shadow even as it was dying threw back necrotic spells at the elf, attempting to strip his very being, nightmarish creatures skittering and crying out as they trampled towards the elf, seeking to eat him alive. The elf in turn conjured his own creatures whom intercepted the chaos beings, ripping and tearing them apart, the light surrounding them eating up the darkness of the nightmarish creatures... only to find the shadow left, with a snap of the elves finger the creatures raced towards Alexandra Keenan, who was only able to give one terrified scream before she was torn apart and eaten alive

Only moments later the shield around Damien disappeared, only minutes had passed in total but the ground was scourged beyond recognition, whatever there had been of the shadow was gone and Sirion's stood there, not even breathing hard as the halo of energy surrounding him dwindled, only to leave a slight tingling in the air..

"We should probably tell Candlekeep about this..."

The elf said neutrally, as if was discussing the weather.. The old man could only comply, perhaps now more frightened of the calm elf before him then he ever was of the shadow that had been Alexandra Keenan. They set off towards Candlekeep, very little said between them.

The old man some days later stood at the friendly arms inn in his room, hand shaking in rage around a glass of cheap whiskey, the content barely touched as the old man stared into the feeble fire he had lit earlier... memories of the words he had shared with Sirion's only a hour before... the elf had made his choice.

The elf who had killed her... the old healer knew... it had not been the first time he had seen the elf commit murder without any hesitation.

The old healer stayed up long that night, recalling how he had nearly died if not for the elf...
The very same elf he was betraying...

"I will serve..."

The old man knelt, trembling on the freezing stone floor, his promise echoing in the dim chamber in which the dark priest stood before him, he nodded his approval as he laid a hand on the old clerics shoulder... The priest seemed surprised at first that anyone would take the offer, however one man was not surprised, not in the slightest. Greil stood there with his mocking smile as he watched the old man bend his knee, shaking his head ruefully before giving less certain promises to the priest before them...

The old man stood in the same room he always stood when he was thinking back on that day, shuddering as he recalled the pit, the cries of the dying and dead... the putrid smell of the recent dead too. He remembered having to have his armour cleaned the very next day, having knelt in blood and other substances when he took his oath.. A hasty sip of the cheap whiskey in his tumbler at least made him forget about the smell of that day for a moment, before it all came crashing back to him... He finished the bottle that night... but another memory stirred

"If it gets out of hand, do we agree - he has to die?"

The cave amplified the words spoken for a slight moment, making the words seem more ominous than perhaps they felt to the Old Man. The bard didn't like hearing the old mans word, but he hesitated long enough to let him know he was considering the option. Not only considering it... willing to pay for the deed. They had discussed the matter on numerous occasions, it seemed soon the bard would give his approval and damn himself as the old man had, but there was coin to be made here, and the clinic he planned to make needed those coins.

The old man mumbles to himself as he looked to the now empty whiskey glass and bottle... knowing he shouldn't he ventured downstairs to buy yet another, taking it back to his room, one hasty drink become very quickly another. His already wrinkled cragged face getting that red glow only a alcoholic could get, his nose and cheeks looking like they had a light frostbite.. But it was worth it... he did it for the clinic... he did it because in the end he was a healer and he wanted to save lives... he was a .. good man..

The old man nodded to himself, knowing the truth of the matter as he put the bottle away for now, as if proving something to himself before sleep in his chair overtook him, dreams of dragons and fire becoming that of a embrace from A Girl who needed his help... like she had helped him...
