Duchal Intrigues

After being deemed an absolute waste of time by Grand Duke Eltan for the City Watch and Flaming Fist to look into, Grand Duke Eltan asked what he termed “The People’s Duke”, Grand Duke Belt, to hire some adventurers to deal with a minor rat plague reported in the sewers. Grand Duke Belt allegedly was ecstatic, seeing what he termed as “expendable adventurers” as the perfect solution, exclaiming that “I used to be one, I would know! Expendable, yes! Just ask my past lady friends.” Later, it is said that some returning adventurers from the sewers in a Baldurian tavern recently spoke of Grand Duke Belt having had a past odd romantic encounter with someone that was allegedly a wererat, including fathering what are now adult wererat children with her. It is said that after Grand Duke Belt had a drink with these adventurers that he even uttered "she still looked good after all that".

It is implied by some that Grand Duke Belt’s family reunion was sadly short lived, however, and that his wererat kin and romantic partner may now all be dead after an adventurer apparently threw a grenade at them, causing an all-out brawl to the death. After the incident, Grand Duke Eltan, when leaving the Duchal Palace and asked about the rat incident, is said to have replied snidely that “he is very happy to hear that The People’s Duke is such a family man”. There are also recent more hushed rumors that Grand Duchess Liia Jannath has recently consulted with the Baldurian dragon sage known as Velsaert about a mysterious and sinister “Nemesis of the Gods” and artifacts its cult may be seeking, among other things.

Selûne Cried Blood

Image

Selûne made it's way through the sky, eclipses were common place viewed in Toril. The tears of Selûne trailed nearby after the orbiting moon as it moved to cross the sun. Something was different though this time. It was near dusk and then it happened...

The sky became washed in deep crimson, so much that it reflected off of Selûne's Tears giving them the appearance of blood dripping from the surface of the heavenly body. The presence of a blood moon eclipse, especially one not expected, caught many off guard. Whispers of omens, signs and coming doom from angered gods started to circulate in many circles. Speculation erupted in religious community and among the drunken tavern folk.

Even the Duchal Palace in Baldur's Gate became abuzz with many talks and rumors. An announcement went out that in two days the Dukes will have a public address from the Duchal Palace.

///Announcement at the palace at 16:00 GMT on Saturday.

Feast of the Moon

Image

Grand Duke Belt addressed the public today, watched by both those from the Duchal palace and the citizens of Baldur's Gate alike. "The People's Duke" announced his intention to organize festivities to celebrate the Festival of the Moon, a festival to celebrate and remember those who have passed on with special emphesis on the heroes who have given their lives in defense of Baldur's Gate amongst the Flaming Fist. The decision is said to be in response to the Blood Moon Eclipse viewed over the Sword Coast. The festivities will begin with a public gala at the Duchal palace. Afterward "the People's Duke" will sponsor several gatherings to tell stories of those who have passed away at taverns and over their graves. The festivities and notion of celebration encouraged many from Baldur's Gate, cheering for "the People's Duke".

Before returning to the palace to speak to, what was rumored were representatives from Blackstaff Tower from Waterdeep, the Duke addressed a question and drew a parallel between the presence of the red dragon whom attacked the Thayan Enclave and the Blood Moon Eclipse, both dire signs of ill omen for something yet revealed. Other rumors spread word that the Duke spoke of the travesty that occured the last time a dragon visited the palace district.

Soubar

It has recently been said by travelers passing through Soubar that the Ebon Blades Mercenary Company and others have helped bring a time of stability and seeming safety to Soubar over the past year despite past threats of orc, crazy Urdlen worshiping gnomes, and undead. After months of stability as a known center of tolerance for the rejected, unwanted, and dangerous of civilization, and those that do not generally fit in elsewhere, a migration of brigands, evil mages, dopplegangers, wererats and other werefolk, mercenaries down on their luck, mind flayers, scurrilous bounty hunters, nefarious dealers, those bearing curses, and others not tolerated in most communities is seen to enter Soubar.

Taken collectively, many of the new arrivals are said to speak enthusiastically of a Soubar that does not preach oppression of faith, profession, polity, pirate captain, race, or morality as compared to other settlements in the Western Heartlands "whether ruled by tyranny of Pirates, Duke, Zhentarim, Lords' Alliance, Amn, Conclave, Innkeeper, Elf, Gnome, Dwarf, Fisherperson, Orc, or other so called 'rulers'." As free, but stable, a place that beings can gather in to be who they are, as long as they don't cause too much trouble in the process.

As the new creatures settle, it is said that that Soubar seems to become a sort of hiring fair of such beings not elsewhere wanted. Mysterious Mag of the Winding Way tavern in Soubar, said to be both more than what she seems and a former flame of Grand Duke Belt, keeps the peace among the lawless, with her secretive methods as to how allegedly terrifying some of the new inhabitants. How more orderly organizations based nearby Soubar such as the Ebon Blades Mercenary Company handle the influx now taking place in Soubar remains to be seen.

Duchal Gala

Image

Preparations are underway in the Palace Ballroom for the upcoming Gala in celebration of the Feast of the Moon. The Gala is open to the public but admittance requires a donation of two thousand gold to support the families of the Flaming Fist who died in service to Baldur's Gate. Talk spreads that there will be standards for hygiene and dress code. Extra security in and around the palace can already be seen.

Other rumors circulate that several of the noble families in Baldur's Gate have already confirmed their attendance as well as the Dukes themselves, the dragon sage Velsaert, the enigmatic Dippledops from Lantan, "Lady" Alyth Elendara the proprietor of the Elfsong Tavern, Elad from the Merchant League and the High Priest of Tyr Eldric Sulnar among others.

Among the Revel

A tenday ago a grand Duchal gala occured in the High Hall or Palace in Baldur's Gate. Many reveled in the soft music, fine food and abundant liquor. Many of the nobles and prominent figures were gathered to celebrate the Feast of the Moon.

The gala did end on a lower tone with some news delivered by Velsaert the Dragon Sage. Such news details about the past and it's implications on the present. Specifically that hat there are 10 rumored shards related to the Nemesis', also known as Tiamat, resurrection in Baldur's Gate that obliterated much of the Palace District around the time of the Amn-Gate War. The kobold cult to Tiamat already has one shard and the many kobolds under a local kobold king ally with Tiamat's cult. The cult of Tiamat seeks the shards as well, but for what purpose is not known. The kind of conflict scales that can be involved with a powerful and sinister and Nemesis of the Gods diety such as Tiamat are immense. He also spoke of Klauth's and the other chromatics and metallic involvement with Tiamat during Tiamat's resurrection. Spoke of the cost of the destruction to the Palace District during resurrection. He stated to report of any shards found and said guesses they would be dragon scales or other objects, but he is not sure. He also added that Tiamat is an extremely powerful evil dragon god that all good dragons fear as should all lesser beings.
